Changing Body Culture with Brianna M. Campos, LPC Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

In this episode, I am joined by Brianna M. Campos, LPC, fat-positive, Health At Every Size provider, mental health counselor, therapist, and body image coach. Bri is passionate about helping others maneuver through their body image journey and heal the relationship that her clients have with their bodies. SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • The intersection one’s relationship to body, food, and movement.

  • The normality of body negativity vs the taboo nature of body positivity.

  • The importance of separating the act of overeating and living in a larger body.

  • The Poodle Science theory that people can live in all different bodies sizes and have the same level of health.

  • How the Health at Every Size® (HAES) approach shifts the focus from weight-focused to a health-focused paradigm, and challenges key assumptions of traditional approaches to weight management while addressing weight bias and stigma in individuals living in larger bodies.

  • HAES in the context of a weight neutral, public health approach with an emphasis on intuitive eating, body acceptance, and physical activity.

  • The need for social change related to body acceptance to reduce weight stigma and bias.

  • The dangers of a $72 billion weight loss industry.

  • How one cannot have true food freedom while manipulating their body size.

  • How fear of living in a fat body can lead one to miss out feelings of belonging.

  • The physical and mental before and after effects of weight loss surgery.
