Episode 51 - Midlife Journey with Heidi J. Dalzell, PsyD

by Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I welcome Heidi J. Dalzell, Clinical Psychologist, with 25+ years experience specializing in eating disorders, trauma and addictive behaviors to the show. She specializes in treating eating disorders and body image concerns, especially in women at midlife. Heidi has a busy private practice and also offers courses/eating disorder online coaching. Heidi is prolific author covering subjects such as eating disorders, addiction, gender identity, mindfulness, racial justice and spirituality. She has spoken nationally and internationally on these topics. She is also the co-author of A Clinician’s Guide to Gender Identity and Body Image.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • The misconception that women in midlife can't get an eating disorder, keeps them from getting the help they need and deserve.

  • Shame felt by women in midlife for having a "young girls’" disorder and accompanying feelings of “not fitting-in” and not being understood in treatment settings as a result.

  • Men and women in midlife are equally as susceptible to societal, unrealistic ideals.

  • Social media serving as a glimpse of someone's life, not reality.

  • Exploring ways for transgender folx to make changes without using their eating disorder.

  • Experiencing the continuum of body image for someone who is transgender.

  • Body acceptance as a state of neutrality, non-judgment, and body ownership is simultaneously a state of self-compassion and love.
