Episode 52 - Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life with Tabitha Farrar

by Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I welcome Tabitha Farrar, eating disorder recovery coach and advocate to the show. After a 12 year battle with an eating disorder, she reached full recovered without professional treatment or support. Since recovering, Tabitha has been an active advocate for de-stigmatizing eating disorders and developing better recovery resources for adults. She has worked with, and learned from, hundreds of adults (if not thousands) in recovery from restrictive eating disorders in her role as a recovery coach. Tabitha has authored four books on eating disorders: Love Fat, an educational memoire on eating disorder recovery and insight, Rehabilitate, Rewire, Recover! — a recovery guide for adults, Neural Rewiring for Eating Disorder Recovery; and Fear of Weight Gain. You can learn more about Tabitha’s services and contributions to the eating disorder field by visiting tabithafarrar.com.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • Can people move through recovery without moving through the scary stuff...nope!

  • People with eating disorders are some of the smartest and most resourceful people and cannot be underestimated.

  • The importance of finding and vocalizing hope in someone else’s recovery.

  • The starting point to the recovery process often lies in the residential treatment process.

  • How residential treatment can help people take the necessary (and scary) steps to begin making healthy choices.

  • The common misconception that recovery can be achieved without changing one’s life outside of the eating disorder.

Having an eating disorder is not a choice. Recovery is.
— Tabitha Farrar

ABOUT TABITHA FARRAR:

Tabitha Farrar grew up in Wiltshire, England, in an idyllic (yet rainy) village. Despite being a robust and confident teenager, she developed an eating disorder at the age 17. This devastating illness took sole position in her life until, at age 25, Tabitha finally started her own recovery journey. She successfully recovered from her eating disorder and the complicated matrix of obsessions and habitual eating disorder behaviors that came with it without any professional help.

Since Recovering, Tabitha has worked as an eating disorder recovery coach and coached hundreds (possibly thousands) of people in recovery. She has written numerous eating disorder recovery guides for adults (see below), peer mentored adults with eating disorders and parents/partners of adults since 2009, has advocated for FBT for adults in eating disorder recovery, and was selected to be a Coordinated Specialty Care Grant Advisory Board member. Tabitha was also a founding member of International Eating Disorder Action and World Eating Disorders Action Day and the founder of Active Eating Disorder Recovery for Adults (AEDRA) Meal Support Service. She is the former host of the Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast.
